Belated February Favorites

Hi! I hope you had a lovely February she writes from a week plus into March.  My favorites of the month are late once again and I’m hoping to not make this a tradition this year.

Here were my favorite things this month:

The Metropolitan Museum of Art: This is my new favorite museum in the world.  It’s so glamorous and one of the great privileges of being a New Yorker is that you can pay whatever you want. My best friend and I went yesterday and paid one dollar each.  There’s so much marble and home decor (for when you’re extremely wealthy of course).  The architecture is unreal and there are lots of parts of the museum that are full of sunlight, statues, and columns.  It feels very dreamy and surreal.  Of course, it is now one of the many museums currently closed due to the virus.  Here’s some pics of me being annoying in front of beautiful art.

Cigarette pants: I’m not a big pant person because they’re super uncomfortable for me but cigarette pants are so chic and make me feel like a seductive femme fatale in an old movie.  I feel like cigarette pants are the most feminine pants and I have a very feminine style.

These are one of the rare things in this world that is worth more than it costs.  It’s so cheap smells so good and makes my skin feel out of this world soft when I’m done scrubbing myself down with it in the shower.  I love how many scents there are (my favorite is the mango).  I try to exfoliate once a week and I used to use coffee grinds and brown sugar but I realized I don’t want to smell like coffee all the time since I’m already always clutching my coffee like it’s the cure.

Nightly refresh mouthwash: It makes my teeth feel so smooth and literally squeaky clean.

Stress ease tea:  I like the cinnamon flavor best cause I find it to be the most comforting. It’s very soothing and I don’t know if it’s a placebo or not but my best friend and I were very sick and drank a very hot cup of this and felt a lot better the next day.

Dislikes:

Essie Gel Nail Polish: literally chipped the first day and then I tried again because I had read some good reviews of it online and it chipped right away once again.  It seems to be regular nail polish to me and not at all gel.

The fact that people have legitimately hoarded toilet paper???! And that most stores are out of it?? There are problems that us civilians have to deal with and some that we create, I don’t know why we had to create this problem smh.  I hate to see greed all around me in such an apparent and unnecessary way.

An article for the broke skincare enthusiasts

Hi all! I found this article on the insta stories of @esteelaundry. @esteelaundry is one of my favorite instagram accounts because they spill the tea on the beauty industry. They also have good reviews and tell you which beauty companies not to support because of their problematic owners and which products don’t live up to the hype. They had me throwing out my banana bright eye cream because a lot of people had been reporting serious eye swelling problems and they included photos send it by their followers.

I love this article because it gives so many recommendations for skin care that I can afford. I’m really excited to check some of these out and thought I’d share.

The $20 Luxury Face Cream

outfit moment

My red phase is still going strong with no end in sight. This is an outfit I never wore outside of my house so I needed to give it its moment to shine here. I really liked this look but it was a little uncomfortable. My friends and I are super lame/cute and went to a bachelor viewing party at a bar (yes it’s a thing). I drank lots of $8 rose and yelled at a lot of people in the TV. I ended up wearing this but without the lingerie underneath (& with out the red wine in my hand).

January Favorites

This is the year I do my favorites every month. Or so she says in the first year of the month :)) fingers crossed.  I hope that we are all still full of hope for this year.

Pozole: I am a Mexican and I have finally learned how to make Pozole and I feel so alive lol.  Now that I’ve completed this rite of passage I am pretty much living off of it this winter.

Cyc spin class: I tried SoulCycle and that shit was too corny for me and also way too much money. Though I did like that they had Drunken Elephant skincare products in the bathroom.  I like Cyc cause it’s about the music and they’re not judgy.  It’s “beat based” and the instructors are inspirational but not over the top.  Also they’re cheaper at $22 a class vs. SoulCycle’s thirty-something.

The dessert: I grew up in the mountains and love the beach.  My dad grew up in the dessert and it was so amazing experiencing it on our way into Mexicali. I love the stillness of it, the feeling of being alone (until immigration inevitably shows up).  I also really love the color scheme.

Rica juice: tastes like orange juice but better cause it’s a little unhealthy

Cheer on Netflix: It’s insanely impressive and I booked a workout for the next morning after the 1st episode.  It’s about the best cheerleaders in the USA (maybe the world?) leading up to the championship and it’s one of those shows that leaves you in awe of what humans can do.  It’s also beautifully shot and makes you fall in love with the people it’s about.

This is my favorite body lotion and has been for a while.  It smells like Jolly Ranches and absorbs quicker than any other lotion I’ve ever used.

This recipe: I switched out the miso paste for tables spoons of trader joe’s boxed miso soup.  And I couldn’t find Tamari sauce at my grocery store so we used thick soba sauce and my grocery failed once again in not having Brussel sprouts so we used broccoli.  Long story short it was delicious and amazing and tasted like something made in a restaurant and not by my incompetent hands.  The sauce was insanely good and we covered it in lime juice. It was a wow meal

Hanalei Lip Treatment in clear:  It feels really luxurious and makes your lips feel lush and protected.  This has been my go to during this season of dry and red skin and so far my lips haven’t been chapped.  My very favorite thing about it might be the smell which is sweet and comforting.

Dislikes:

Global warming: It so real and so apparent here in NYC.  We had basically no snow in December and it’s been raining.  I’ve worn sundresses in January.  It’s so strange and jarring and please let me know what I can do to help.

Duvets: more trouble than they’re worth. I’m a professional cleaner who has changed them and dealt with them a million times and I still hate them.  I just wash my comforter and its easier than washing the duvet cover and doing the whole ugly gymnastic routine to get it on the duvet.

Small Ways to be more Eco Friendly

I was thinking of how I can be better to the world in the shower today (while trying step by step to unwind).  It’s hard not to constantly stress about the state of the planet and these little things have helped me turn that anxiety into action (no matter how small).  Do what you can and don’t beat your self up 🙂

  1. When you don’t need one ask for no receipt.
  2. Pack your own lunch in a reusable lunch container.
  3. Go thrifting! Also, this is so fun because there’s nothing more rewarding than getting a unique piece for way cheaper then you would at a place that makes thousands of the same item.
  4. Bring your own water bottle from home and refill it when you drink it all instead of buying a disposable plastic water bottle.  And if you do forget and need to buy a plastic water bottle refill it and use it a few times before you toss it.
  5. Wash your hair less.  I used to wash my hair every time I got in the shower (every day) and then I read how actually this isn’t good for your hair and strips it of your natural oils that make it shiny and healthy-looking.  I now wash my hair once every few showers and go through shampoo and conditioner a lot less then I used to and my hair looks way better than before. Win, win.
  6. See if you could be a paper towel/napkin free home and use rags and cloth napkins instead.
  7. Turn off the lights when you leave the room.

exciting or stressful?

Hi internet void,

I hope you’re doing well if anyone reads this.  I really love writing on here cause it’s an outlet for self-expression and lately I’ve been feeling numb and uninspired.  So I’m gonna try and come back, even to just practice noticing how I’m feeling.

The main reason I haven’t been being consistent on here is cause I decided (impulsively) to start a business.  It’s called Cleaning con Flores and it’s a small cleaning business.  Right now it’s just me and my best friend.  There’s always something to be done for it (or things that I’m behind on doing) and it’s so much to even just make it legally a business with my city.  It’s all worth it though cause it’s my own and my idea and I will never run out of energy to throw behind it.

More than anything it’s bought me great pride and great stress.  I am proud of it because I had an idea and didn’t let it go and decided to make it a real thing.  The idea was super simple what if I cleaned houses but gave a bit more than that?  We bring flowers to each cleaning and offer a survey which allows clients to communicate their exact desires of what they’re looking for.

Since I’ve last written on here I’ve filed for the company to be a limited liability corporation, hired a business lawyer, learned that I should have become a lawyer as mine is an inexpensive lawyer and she makes $275 an hour (!!), had a logo made, made an Instagram for the company, made a facebook page and website for the websites, had business cards made, gotten a direct deposit system up and running, etc. etc. etc.

I have three jobs and I do not recommend it (to anyone ever) and also somehow have $80 in my bank account.  Since I’ve last written I’ve also gone through a really hard break up (still going through it), taken up working out, become addicted to Starbucks (dolce cinnamon lattes and hazelnut lattes are it for me) and blew through my savings cause I someone rammed into my lyft driver and I went to the hospital to see if I had a concussion.  I was in and out of the ER in literally 30 mins and was spoken to by a condescending doctor for 5 mins max who told me I had a slight concussion.  I paid a $100 co-pay for all that (wasn’t even given an Asprin) and walked out thinking that was the last of it. Yesterday I got a bill saying that my parent’s insurance didn’t recognize me and I owe them $1,065.  I have to pay the lawyer $800 so make my business filed in my county (whatever that means) and my rent is about to go from $700 to $1,400 because my ex-boyfriend is moving out.  I am pretty weary and I don’t feel young at all.  I feel like I can not catch a break and when I do it’s so small in comparison to the amount of mess of me to clean up all around me.

It’s hard to practice self care when you can’t even find the time to be off the clock.  It’s hard to feel healthy when your own stress is working against your well being.  It’s hard to feel okay when you work so hard and that hustle isn’t reflected in your bank app.

Love and deep breaths,

Zelda

Rich People Things

hi, I’m poor so I’m making a list of rich people things probably cause I’m jealous and also probably cause I’m bored.

  1. towel warmers
  2. hotel rooms with more than just a bedroom
  3. doormen and those apts with big signs saying all guests must be announced and always ask for ID
  4. unboxing videos and hauls
  5. going to Bali and Singapore
  6. not taking the subway (“we don’t go above 14th st.” is a real quote)
  7. talking about botox at brunch
  8. talking incessently about “Delhi belly” and other “water poisoning” they got on their exotic vacation across the globe
  9. “Flat or sparkling?”
  10. Coat check

& three is a party

On my first week off in a whole real while, my best friend came to stay at my house.  My nanny family was vacationing in the Dominican Republic and I was ready to have a staycation.  I went upstate to visit my family for a day and then Olive came back with me which felt so good cause it was like bringing a piece of my hometown back to my home.

We slept in, we drank excessive amounts of coffee, we watched Yummy Mummys (terrible but entertaining tv) and the Umbrella Academy (good tv) and also I used my prized possession, my blender and made margaritas and we got drunk in my living room.  Being young and extra as we are we got dressed up and put on heels and we danced our very uncoordinated hearts out in my living room to salsa that blared from the google home.  It was delicious innocent fun.  For a moment there we even flirted with the idea of leaving the house but that is not really our style (mi novio, Olive and I have hermit tendencies and we had everything we needed in the house anyway).

It was so much fun and I even danced even though I can not dance and know so very well.  I was the perfect level of drunk and I felt good the next morning.  When I get drunk I get hyper and then I get sleepy so after we stopped dancing we started watching Yummy Mummies again and I left to change out of my itchy Fashion Nova evening gown into PJ’s and just accidentally stripped down to my underwear and fell asleep in my bed leaving Olivia and mi novio to Yummy Mummies lol.  Anyways here are three photos from that night that I love and adore.  And I hope you have a three-person party soon.  It’s fun, it’s cheap, it’s safe, it’s easy and you can play whatever damn music you’d like.  10/10 would recommend

very late oscars best dressed

These are my Oscars best dressed (in no particular order cause making decisions are hard and it is 1:41 AM).  The best part of the Oscars to me is the fashion and thinking of all the people it took to make that one person look that good.  The Oscar’s are sometimes inspiring and sometimes sickening cause I can’t stop thinking about all the people who have so so much less than these people (including my lovely self who is sipping her cup of noodles as she rights this).  But anyways here are some very beautiful people in very beautiful dresses. And I hope we all get raises this week!

Amandla Stenberg

I love a 20’s look and she looks like such a goddess.

I love it cause it’s elegant and fun and dramatic all at the same time.  Also, I really appreciate how minimal they kept the hair and makeup.

I think this is a really pretty color in her and I love how elegant and sexy this dress is.  I’m really obsessed with it and how it looks like she’s wearing a glamorous scarf but she doesn’t actually do have to deal with wearing it and positioning it right.  Perfection.

Ruffles were really big this Oscars.  I love how sexy this dress is and I love a good fit and flare, though I would have made it a different color.

I am so obsessed with this dress.  It is lavender and sparkly and those are two of my favorite things in this world. I want it.

This is one of my favorite colors and the jewelry on this dress is so intricated and delightful.  This is such a princess dress and I love.  I would have worn a different necklace though.

This is giving me bad ass Carmen Sandiago on a date vibes so obviously I’m a fan.

I love this dress. Again this was a big Oscars for ruffles.  Love the gold accenting and the strategic ruffling.
